Museums are the best attractions when visiting a new city. There’s nothing like education and exercise combined to really wear your kids out for the day but in a good way! There are so many choices so let’s start from the top.
The Children’s Museum of Atlanta
If you are traveling with your children you should definitely stop at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. It was founded in 1988 and the museum open to the public in 2003. The exhibits are designed for children to learn about their community and how the world operates from hands-on experiences. Different exhibits are coming and going all of the time, keeping things fresh. Currently, they are featuring the Wild Kratts in a subversive experience. There are some permanent exhibits as well that teach about food in the United States and how it is produced, shipped, and consumed. There’s another exhibit that teaches children about geography and culture called The Gateway to the World.
Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park
If you’re hoping to learn a bit more about history then you should stop at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park. There are several sites that are all related to the civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. MLK grew up in Atlanta and you can even visit his childhood home. Much of the area was turned into a national historic landmark and they’ve added onto it since. Not only can you learn about Dr. King but you can also visit freedom Hall which shows exhibits honoring Mahatma Gandhi and Rosa Parks. Additionally, there is the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame which was created in 2004 and honors participants of the civil rights movement.
Van Gogh Immersive Expereicne
For an extraordinary experience, as opposed to a museum, check out the Van Gogh Immersive Experience. This is a newer exhibit in Atlanta. It is several immersive rooms that showcase Van Gogh’s iconic artwork through projected visuals on the walls, floors, and ceiling. Additionally you can enter a virtual reality experience featuring the artist’s famous works. Lastly, there is an exhibit that shows his art in a way that you have never seen before. It features many re-creations and three-dimensional objects from his works that seem to come to life.
The Center for Puppetry Arts
Our next museum is another one that is out of the box. The Center for Puppetry Arts is the largest dedication to the art form of puppetry in the United States. There are several stages of the museum and the first section teaches you about the history of puppetry. The next section generally showcases a performance by the talented folks who work at the museum. And lastly, there is the museum part with exhibits of puppets from different time periods and countries all around the world. Puppetry is quite an ancient art form. Puppets have been used for centuries to communicate and visualize ideas, emotions, and how we interact as a community. You may be surprised about how much you can learn about puppets while visiting this one of a kind museum.
Fernbank Science Center
And lastly, for those who are truly a nerd at heart, we have the Fernbank Science Center. The Fernbank Science Center features a planetarium that has a 500-seat theater and was built in the 1960s. Additionally, the center hosts the Fernbank robotics team. They are known as Fernbank LINKS and they were established in 2002. This robotics team has participated in two robotic competitions and encourages STEM education for children and young adults. The museum also features the Apollo 6 command module, a dinosaur exhibit, and an observatory.
Making a stop at any of these will guarantee you have a great time while visiting Atlanta. It may even be fun enough that you decide to look at houses for rent in Atlanta. This city has some of the coolest museums we’ve ever seen, and there are more than 2 dozen in the city of Atlanta alone. There’s so much to do and so much to learn that you’ll want to visit every one.
